A group of 20 kindergarten to sixth-grade Orange County physical education teachers took part in training with Hall of Fame golfer Annika Sorenstam in December. A grant from Sorenstam’s ANNIKA Foundation paid for the new program the teachers were learning.
Called SPARK, the research-based physical education program aims to reduce obesity by making gym class more inclusive, active and fun.
A sample lesson called Snakes and Lizards requires one group of students to move around a perimeter and another group to balance, such as by standing on one foot, between guesses about which hand a student is using to hide an object.
Another lesson, called Aerobic Bowling, incorporates a bit of running in a bowling lesson by having students run to the start line, run to retrieve the ball and run to set up the pins.
